Terroir of La Landonne
At the heart of the vertiginous Côte-Rôtie landscape, this parcel rests on the lower part of the slope, where Syrah reaches its finest levels of ripeness. The clay-limestone soil is composed of schist rich in iron oxides mixed with fragments of mica-schist, bringing the wine depth, tension, color, and structure.
La Landonne expresses the singularity of one of the finest parcels at the heart of Côte-Rotie, benefiting from a double exposure in the northernmost appellation of the Northern Rhône. With sunlit emotion for a broad, majestically present wine, it offers a complex aromatic palette with sensual notes of peony and sweet spices, a fullness without heaviness.
Vintages
Vintage
After a rainy end to 2022, an exceptionally dry winter and early spring led to early and uniform budburst. The wetter late spring, with no mistral winds, was offset by favorable flowering conditions, accelerating the vegetative cycle. Veraison progressed steadily in late July. The August heatwave hastened ripening in parts of the vineyard, sometimes resulting in heterogeneity between parcels.
Winemaking and ageing
The harvest is carried out by hand. Once destemmed, the berries are transferred by gravity into truncated conical stainless steel vats. Gentle extraction is carried out mainly during the early stages of fermentation, using carefully calibrated pump-overs and punch-downs.
After pressing, the wine is racked and transferred to barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, where the first phase of ageing occurs over six months, with 20% new oak. The second phase of ageing continues in 25-hectolitre foudres for 12 months, in order to bring breadth and balance without excessive oak influence. The cuvée is then blended back into stainless steel tanks for a final three-month refinement before bottling.
wine profile
True to its vintage, the colour is a deep ruby red.
At this stage, the nose of this cuvée displays remarkable delicacy, dominated by fruity notes (redcurrants, raspberries). As it opens up in the glass, subtle spicy notes emerge.
The aromas are carried by a very refreshing hint of menthol. This creates an airy bouquet, extremely delicate and complex.
The attack on the palate prolongs this sensation of freshness before the tannic structure emerges in a crescendo.

“The epitome of classic Côte-Rôtie; elaborate violet florals, dark pools of blackberries and blue plums amid nuances of incense and tapenade. Alluring tannins support and polish the serious structure with plentiful tension and acidity to assist.”

Vintage
Marked by exceptional drought conditions and unusually early ripening, the 2022 vintage will be remembered as one of the most distinctive in recent years. Following a late budburst caused by winter cold, a warm and sunny spring accelerated vine development, while the heat of summer encouraged remarkable berry concentration. Despite limited yields, the harvest revealed grapes in outstanding sanitary condition, combining intensity, balanced ripeness, freshness and precision.

After draining off, the wine is racked and placed into barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, where the wine undergoes the first stage of its ageing for 6 months, with 20% new oak. The second phase continues in 25 hL foudres for 12 months, bringing breadth and balance without excessive oak influence. The cuvée is then returned to stainless steel for a final 3 month refinement before bottling.
Wine profile
The wine displays a deep, dark color with violet highlights. The nose opens with complex aromas of peony, violet, black pepper, and licorice, complemented by sensual notes of incense and fine leather.
On the palate, it is broad, enveloping, and almost spherical in texture. The body is dense yet fluid, with perfectly integrated tannins. The finish is long and vibrant, balanced by mineral freshness and a mouthwatering, saline-driven structure.

“The 2022 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is a much more singular wine and just screams La Landonne with its smoky, meaty profile. Darker black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, leather, and woodsmoke all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s very much in the style of the vintage and will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. […].”

“Dark, brooding and sultry, with textural intrigue behind flavors of smoked cherry, black currant and mocha enrobed in toasty oak. There’s a flash of mesquite on the slightly chewy palate, solidly grounded by bolts of iron. Salty and complex, with incense and dried violet notes echoing on the substantial finish, which will unwind with a few years in the bottle. […].”

“A very elegant expression of the Cote Brune section of this appellation, with stunning concentration, masses of super-silky tannins and fantastic tension. That drives the extremely long finish, which is as pointed and bright as a flashing fencing sword. Yes, this is a full-bodied wine, but you hardly think about the body. […].”
