Terroir of Le Clos
The Clos Saint-George is a world unto itself. The historic property was built in 1857 and was producing wine even before the creation of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation in 1937. Enclosed within its walls, the Clos shelters a landscaped park, fruit trees, and 2.5 hectares of planted vines. The terroir lies on deep alluvial terraces, rich in rounded pebbles and clay, which give the wines a dense structure and freshness.
One of the finest expressions of Syrah, Clos Saint-Geopge combines structural power with an aromatic palette of fruit and flowers. It expresses an astonishing interplay of strength and finesse, a wine crafted for long ageing.

vintage
After a rainy end to 2022, an exceptionally dry winter and early spring led to early and uniform budburst. The wetter late spring, with no mistral winds, was offset by favorable flowering conditions, accelerating the vegetative cycle. Veraison progressed steadily in late July. The August heatwave hastened ripening in parts of the vineyard, sometimes resulting in heterogeneity between parcels.
winemaking and ageing
The harvest is carried out by hand, after which the grapes are destemmed and gravity-fed into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Each parcel is vinified separately in order to preserve the identity of each terroir within the Clos. Extractions are conducted gently, through moderate pump-overs and punch-downs, to preserve the Syrah’s natural elegance and avoid any tannic harshness.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, where a 15-month ageing period begins, with 30% new oak, with the aim of enhancing the cuvée’s ageing potential.
A final blending is carried out in stainless steel vats, where the wine rests for a further six months to ensure optimal integration of structure and ageing.
wine profile
The colour is an intense red with garnet highlights.
After a few swirls, notes of black cherries and red fruits, such as blackcurrant, emerge. The aromas then develop into floral notes of rose and peony.
On the palate, one is genuinely surprised by the freshness of the attack. The delicacy of the structure has been beautifully preserved by gentle ageing. The tannins are well-integrated and the oaky notes remain very subtle.

“Still very young and a little bit closed (with some graphite aroma), this great Crozes-Hermitage has a very compact structure and excellent concentration. But what makes it really stand out is the wonderful freshness that lights up the long, stony finish. As the wine aerates in the glass, the peppery, savory and meaty aromas of syrah unfurl like a flag in the wind. […] Excellent aging potential but can be drunk from release.”

“Just across from the Clos Florentin on the other side of the Rhône River, the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos is deeper hued with a gorgeously textured, medium to full-bodied style that’s just about already hard to resist. Red and black fruits, game, bouquet garni, and peppery, floral notes all define the aromatics, and it’s balanced, has fine tannins, and a great finish. Brought up in 30% new oak, this is a stunning wine in the making.”

Vintage
Marked by exceptional drought conditions and unusually early ripening, the 2022 vintage will be remembered as one of the most distinctive in recent years. Following a late budburst caused by winter cold, a warm and sunny spring accelerated vine development, while the heat of summer encouraged remarkable berry concentration. Despite limited yields, the harvest revealed grapes in outstanding sanitary condition, combining intensity, balanced ripeness, freshness and precision.
winemaking and ageing
The harvest is carried out by hand, then the grapes are destemmed and transferred by gravity into temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Each parcel is vinified separately in order to preserve the identity of each terroir within the Clos. Extraction is conducted gently, through moderate pump-overs and punch-downs, to maintain the natural elegance of Syrah and avoid any tannic harshness.
After draining off, the wine is racked and placed into barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, where the wine begins an ageing period of 15 months, with 30% new oak, reflecting the intention to reinforce the cuvée’s ageing potential.
A final blending is carried out in stainless steel, where the wine rests for an additional 6 months to ensure optimal integration of structure and élevage.
wine profile
The wine displays a deep ruby color with garnet highlights.
On the nose, it develops aromas of stewed black fruits, particularly blackcurrant and blackberry, evolving with delicate notes of leather and game.
On the palate, the wine reveals a perfect balance of delicacy, breadth, and smoothness. The finish lingers gracefully with notes of very ripe black cherries.

“The 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Le Clos is a solid step up and has a perfumed, ripe, floral, singular style. Red and black berries, black licorice, flowers, leather, and some meaty nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s another sun-kissed yet elegant, balanced effort.[…].”

“A seductive core of red fruit is flanked by cigar box and pepper on a silky palate amply dusted in graphite, cured meat and sandalwood smoke. Simmers with inner density and energy yet manages to stay light on its feet as this stretches on and on. Harmonious and seamless. […].”

“This single-vineyard Crozes-Hermitage has excellent integration of fresh plum fruit and spicy oak with a lot of licorice and some meaty complexity. A touch of something balsamic develops in the glass. Impressive concentration for just 12.5% alcohol, the tannins building to an imposing crescendo. A pure syrah matured exclusively in Burgundian oak casks, of which 20% were new. […].”
