FAQ

THE MAISON AND WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE

What sets Delas Frères apart from other Rhône Valley wine houses?

Our Maison was built on founding values that continue to guide every decision we make today: respect for the land and its people, humility, excellence and the passing on of tradition. Proud of our heritage, we have embraced a renewed vision built around three pillars that define our uniqueness: access to some of the Northern Rhône’s most iconic vineyards, a complementary team and an exceptional winery in the heart of Tain-l’Hermitage.

How long has Delas Frères existed?

The origins of our House date back to 1835 with the establishment of Maison Junique in Tournon-sur-Rhône. Philippe Delas and Charles Audibert took over the business in 1870. In 1924, Philippe Delas’s sons renamed it “Delas Frères”, with the ambition of revealing the finest terroirs of the Northern Rhône.

Is Delas Frères a négociant wine house?

Our activity is built on three complementary collections. Through our Single-Vineyard Collection, we cultivate and vinify grapes from some of the Northern Rhône’s most renowned vineyards, including Les Bessards in Hermitage, La Landonne in Côte-Rôtie, Clos Boucher in Condrieu, Sainte-Épine in Saint-Joseph and Clos Saint-Georges in Crozes-Hermitage. We also work with carefully selected winegrowers whose grapes contribute to our Domaines & Terroirs Collection. Finally, our sourcing expertise is expressed through the Signature Collection, for which we retain full control over blending and ageing. Together, these three collections reflect the breadth of our expertise.

Are Delas Frères vineyards organically farmed?

The vineyards we operate are certified High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3) since 2018 and have been certified organic since 2024.

Who crafts Delas Frères wines?

Our wines are crafted by a team of complementary winemaking experts led by Jacques Grange, Technical Director, alongside Marco Beckmann, Cellar Master, and Clément Panigai, Vineyard Director. Combining passion, experience and sensitivity, this team brings a fresh dynamic to our wines.

What makes the Delas winery unique?

The winery in Tain-l’Hermitage was designed as a precision tool, providing optimal control over the winemaking process. A remarkable architectural achievement, it was designed by Carl Fredrik Svenstedt and inaugurated in 2020. Every aspect of the facility has been conceived to serve the purest expression of each vineyard parcel. We favour gentle winemaking techniques, including slow fermentations, precise temperature management, minimal racking and tailored ageing programmes for every wine.

THE COLLECTIONS AND THE TERROIRS

What is the difference between the three Delas Frères collections?

The Single-Vineyard Collection embodies the pure expression of our most emblematic Northern Rhône terroirs, with each wine originating from a parcel. The Domaines & Terroirs Collection reflects our dedication and expertise in revealing the character of the region’s great appellations. The Signature Collection showcases our sourcing expertise through wines selected from our trusted winegrowers partners.

What is the difference between Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage?

Both appellations are located around Tain-l’Hermitage. Hermitage is a rare and prestigious appellation. The Hill of Hermitage is the only classified site in the entire Rhône Valley, renowned for its dramatic slopes and wines of remarkable depth and ageing potential. Crozes-Hermitage is a larger and more diverse appellation, encompassing both hillside terraces and flatter vineyard sites. Its wines are generally fruit-driven and approachable, although some cuvées also offer excellent ageing capacity.

Why is Syrah emblematic of the Northern Rhône?

Syrah is the flagship red grape variety of the Northern Rhône. Native to the region, it thrives on its steep slopes, developing a highly distinctive character. Its expression varies greatly depending on soil type, exposure, ripeness and ageing, making vineyard-specific interpretations particularly fascinating.

CHOOSING, SERVING AND CELLARING

At what temperature should a Delas Frères red wine be served?

Most of our red wines are best enjoyed between 15°C and 18°C (59°F and 64°F). Fruity, supple wines such as Crozes-Hermitage or Saint-Joseph from the Signature Collection can be served at the lower end of this range, while Hermitage and Cornas are generally best enjoyed between 16°C and 18°C (61°F and 64°F).

How long can a Delas Frères wine be cellared?

Ageing potential depends on the cuvée, vintage, bottle format and storage conditions. Our technical sheets indicate the estimated ageing potential of each wine. This is not an expiration date but rather a projected window during which the wine is likely to evolve favourably under proper cellaring conditions.
