terroir of la Galopine

On the west bank of the Rhône, a terroir that almost disappeared after the war is being reborn: Condrieu. It has found its natural home on steeply sloping terraces overlooking the majestic river. High on the hillsides, poor, acidic granite soils, formed over centuries, dictate the conditions for the vines. Here, the vines express themselves with restraint yet splendour. Although yields are naturally low, the grapes possess a remarkable aromatic concentration.

La Galopine is a bright and beautifully balanced expression of Viognier. A generous yet precise wine, it weaves together aromatic richness, mineral freshness, and natural elegance, capturing the true character of the Condrieu terroir.

Rainfall between April and June was significantly higher than the average of the past ten years. This led to high disease pressure from fungal pathogens, resulting in substantial losses across a large part of the vineyard.

Fortunately, the summer conditions that followed (July–August) helped preserve the grapes in good sanitary condition through to harvest.

Harvesting was therefore carried out according to a relatively late and particularly extended schedule, from September 10 to 29. Following rigorous sorting, yields settled at around 20 hl/ha.

winemaking and ageing

The grapes, left whole, are gently pressed, with a rigorous separation of free-run juice and press juice. The must then rests overnight at 10°C to preserve its purity. The following day, a light settling is carried out before alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks at 15°C.

Fermentation continues slowly, between 16 and 18°C, allowing for a precise and elegant aromatic expression. Once the sugars are fully consumed, malolactic fermentation is intentionally blocked to preserve the wine’s natural freshness.

Regular bâtonnage is performed each week until Christmas, bringing roundness and complexity. The wine then continues its ageing for 12 months in stainless steel, with part of the cuvée matured in Burgundy barrels to refine the texture and enhance the wine’s structure before bottling.

“Lively and gourmand, the 2024 Condrieu La Galopine wafts from the glass with aromas of honeysuckle, pear, white fruits and spices mingled with fresh menthol notes. Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it’s dense and concentrated, built around a vibrant core of fruit that carries through a long, perfumed finish. The acidity is preserved by blocking malolactic fermentation on the Viognier, lending the wine notable freshness and tension.”
